Sonic Unleashed - A First Look
by Dick Ward July 18th 2008 5:42 PM CDT0 Comments

Xbox Focus' Dick Ward takes a look forward at Sonic Unleashed. Can it revitalize the franchise or will it dissapoint? I got to sit down and take a look at a demo of Sonic Unleashed, coming out for the 360 this Christmas season. Boasting a great deal of improvement over past Sonic titles, the developers got right into it and showed us one of the early levels. The game was rapid fire and moved incredibly smoothly, as would be expected from a Sonic game. Everything seemed pretty standard, but very nicely polish. Click for more after the jump.
Of course, the night time levels brought a bit of a surprise. Due to some evil scheme of Eggman's, by the light of the moon, Sonic turns into a Werehog. Like a werewolf, but with a hedgehog. Confusingly, he's already a bit of a mix between human and hedgehog, so rather than turn into something else, he just gets big slow and angry. More of a Jeckyll and Hyde sort of thing.
The premise is a bit weird, but, and I am in a small minority, I quite liked the way the Werehog worked. With stretchy arms to ascent otherwise impossible cliffs and some really cool special attacks and combos, the Werehog sections looked like a lot of fun. Maybe a Sonic game isn't the best place for them though.
While certainly not a return to form, Sonic fans should keep this one on their radar.
