Week in the Xbox 360: 3/5-11/08
by March 11th 2008 7:59 PM CDT2 Comments
Have you heard about the Xbox 360 owner who got screwed over by Microsoft Support? In case you haven't, gamer Nathaniel had some serious signitures on his console, as well as custom artwork. But, like everyone elses 360, his was attacked by the RROD monster. He decided, after speaking to Support over the phone, that his console and not someone elses would be returned to him, signitures, pictures and all intact. Lo and behold his console returned plush white. Same exact console, same case...just polished over. What kind of douchebag would do such a thing? Some things can be nothing short of stupendously astounding.
Thankfully, the internet exists and the world heard this gamers plea. Well, not so much the world as Bungie Studios, who now makes us all wish that happened to us. Not only did he get signitures from all the Bungie staff, he got a ton of swag which you can see listed below. Damn, lucky guy.
There was also a small rumor that a 60GB version 360 SKU is in the works, which is great news. Considering how big Xbox Live is (it's comparable to iTunes), the 20GB hard drive standard on all models but the Elite gets pretty cramped for anyone who has any demos, music, XBLA titles or videos and wants to rent an HD movie on top of that. And since we can't just replace the drive easily like the PS3, a 60GB version is highly needed.
Bully, which came out this week for the 360 after an initial release on the PS2, came loaded with bugs. Well, at least if you have an older 360. Rockstar has been working on porting the game over with enhanced graphics, fixes, etc and amazingly didn't see a single bug in their QA testing.
Remarkably, according to Rockstar it's because the older model 360's function a bit differently from the newer models, and they only have newer models. Presumably, and intelligently, so they don't have RROD problems. They immediately found out about the problems and were super apologetic about it, and have been working around the clock to get a patch out. It should be ready by next week, but then we have to wait for Microsoft to get the download up and available.
The HD-DVD player for the 360, officially dead to Microsoft, is now super cheap. While it's a useless piece of hardware, it's also a cheaper useless piece of hardware. Useless nonetheless.
The big release of the week was Army of Two, which we've reviewed here for your viewing pleasure. Bully was the other big release, but no point in getting that if you've got an older SKU until the first patch is out.
Next week's games list is short and sweet: Condemned 2: Bloodshot, and PES 08 (Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008). If what we've heard about Condemned 2 is true, it should be a gory, gory game. In a good way.
